Five years ago, a planned execution on 37-year-old Leonard Mahadeo of Diamond, New Housing Scheme failed, but his executioners finally succeeded in their attempts last Friday evening at Eccles, East Bank Demerara.
Mahadeo, a prominent businessman formerly of Soesdyke Back Road, East Bank Demerara (EDB) was gunned down execution style while imbibing at the Soca Paradise Sports Bar located at Old Road Eccles, East Bank Demerara. The incident occurred at about 22: 35h.
According to reports received, Mahadeo who normally moves with a group of friends went alone to the bar owned by another friend when he was attacked and killed by two masked men armed with AK- 47s.
The men reportedly disembarked a silver Toyota Premio luxury car, walked into the bar, and opened fire on Mahadeo who used his hands to fend off the hail of bullets. They then calmly walked back to their car and sped away from the scene.
Mahadeo, who was wearing a white t-shirt, a pair of black three-quarter pants and a pair of slippers died almost immediately. His bullet-riddled body was escorted to the Lyken Funeral Home where a post mortem examination will be performed.
From reports gathered, the deceased allegedly lived a “dangerous” lifestyle, and was implicated several times in various alleged drug operations, but was never charged. When Guyana Times International visited the dead man’s parents home, at Soesdyke, EBD, his mother and sister were in a state of shock and disbelief. They said that they received the devastating news at about 23:00h last Friday evening, and immediately rushed to the scene. The dead man’s mother explained that when they arrived, the man’s reputed wife went into the shop to identify his motionless body.
Mahadeo’s reputed wife reportedly told relatives that his body was badly damaged from bullet wounds.
According to reports, Mahadeo’s mobile phone and all the jewellery he was wearing at the time were intact. Investigators have since ruled out robbery. Guyana Times International understands that on his arrival to the bar, he telephoned his friends to meet him there, but by the time they arrived, the businessman was already dead. The dead man’s sister in tears noted that her brother normally visits the bar on a regular basis, and the execution was well implemented.
The family is now exploring the possibility that the man might have been killed by someone who knew that he was at the drinking spot all alone.
At the house of his reputed wife, his children were being consoled by relatives and friends. His wife noted that she received the call, and upon arriving at the scene and seeing his body, she was left dumbfounded. She said that she was told that people were in the shop earlier and left by which time the men made their way into the shop and killed Mahadeo. No one was able to recognise the registration number of the getaway car, nor did they see the faces of the executioners.
A friend recalled that Mahadeo was a very sensitive and helpful person. She noted that when her son died in a vehicular accident some time back, Mahadeo was the first to offer financial assistance to her family. Again, when her business was burglarised, Mahadeo asked whether or not she needed money to get back on her feet, she added. Another friend recounted that the last time he saw his friend alive was a few days ago. He explained that Mahadeo is his second friend who has been killed execution style.
Mahadeo’s brother-in-law, Thakur Persaud was killed in a similar fashion three years ago in the UNAMCO trail in the vicinity of Kwakwani, Region 10. Persaud, also a businessman, was killed during an ambush. No one was arrested for his murder. His two employees, who were with him at the time, escaped injury and were questioned and released from police custody.
Police found the body of Thakur Persaud approximately 90 miles up the UNAMCO trail in a clump of bushes just off the road.
Mahadeo was attacked while drinking in a bar on Barr Street some five years ago. He was shot several times and his BMW was damaged in the process. Mahadeo leaves to mourn his reputed wife, children, parents and siblings.
