The long awaited Guyana Telephone and Telegraph Company (GT&T) BlackBerry service will be launched on November 11, 2011. This was announced by the company’s Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Yog Mahadeo, on Saturday at an event to launch its Christmas promotion. The announcement took place at the Pegasus Parking Lot, Georgetown.
The disclosure comes at a time when thousands of GT& T customers had begun to lose hope that the company was unable to break Digicel’s grip on the coveted service.
Earlier in the year, Mahadeo said that GT& T’s supporters can expect the unveiling of the service before year-end, and has stuck to his promise. While the company is launching its BlackBerry service, GT& T is very keen on making Android smart phones and other services available to its customers.
Tapping into the BlackBerry market has been a major stumbling block for the company, but all the hurdles have been crossed.
“We have been debating, analysing lots of things about the BlackBerry service and the fact that our customer-base views the BlackBerry service as important is a good indication for us,” Mahadeo had said in a previous interview.
The elated Mahadeo remarked that GT& T is not only intent on providing BlackBerry service, but one which is superior and of high quality. According to him, the company’s aim is to ensure that the customers’ experience be rewarding and novel.
“We just didn’t want to bring a BlackBerry and put it in people’s hand, but over the last year everything we have done is not just about promoting events, but of quality experiences.
“Everything we have done is a new experience, and we want to ensure that the day we launch the BlackBerry, it will be a different experience for our Guyanese brothers and sisters,” Mahadeo said. He also promised that the company’s BlackBerry service will be one of quality at a very affordable price.
Currently, Digicel is the only company in Guyana, marketing the in-demand BlackBerry service, a data and voice service that are much loved by businesses and other professionals always on the move.
In March, as GT& T was preparing to launch its BlackBerry service, Digicel Guyana CEO, Gregory Deane, said the company is always ready and open for competition with a view of bringing new services to the Guyanese populace.
Deane noted that Digicel brought competition to Guyana, and sees it as a challenge to maintain the standard set and raising the quality of service provided to customers.
He said he is proud of the achievements of the company since its establishment here a few years ago and noted that there is much more to be offered to faithful customers, as well as those who plan to use the service in the near future.
BlackBerry functions as a personal digital assistant with address book, calendar, memopad and task list capabilities.
It also functions as a portable media player with support for music and video playback and camera and video capabilities.
BlackBerry is also primarily known for its ability to send and receive Internet e-mail wherever mobile network service coverage is present, or through Wi-Fi connectivity. BlackBerry has the ability to use wireless data efficiently while using less power than other phones.
BlackBerry commands a 14.8 per cent share of worldwide Smartphone sales, making it the fifth most popular device manufacturer after Nokia, Samsung, LG, and Apple.
The consumer BlackBerry Internet Service is available in 91 countries worldwide on over 500 mobile service operators using various mobile technologies.
