Govt electricity investment in Mahdia a blessing to residents

When the government invested Gy $150M in the establishment of the Mahdia Power and Light (MPL) in October 2011, which it heavily subsidises, it was with the objective of creating economic opportunities and a better life for residents of the Region Eight mining district.  Now five months after, the residents are very appreciative of this investment which has indeed created improvements and has enhanced developments in the community.

Customers
There are about 280 metered customers who receive the first 15 – kilowatt of power free, a subsidy afforded by Government following which they are charged a minimum cost of Gy$100 per kilowatt.
Government also subsidises the fuel (diesel) for the plant’s operations and, provides the Board with duty-free letters that allow for a reduced purchase price of fuel either through the Guyana Power and Light (GPL) or the Guyana Oil Company (GuyOil).
The plant operates two generating sets; a 600 and a 350 KVA sets. When the synchronising mode is on; the computerised system of the plant determines the level of the power load and automatically determines which generating set to use. (GINA)
