The Guyana government is building three housing schemes to provide young professionals houses according to Housing Minister, Irfaan Ali.
Minister Ali was quoted by the Government Information Agency (GINA) as saying the ministry and the private sector are holding talks about the project. He said the aim is to build three-bedroom houses at Gy$8.5M each for young professionals.
On the re-migrant scheme, he announced that more than 600 house-lots have been already allocated and the remaining 400 will be allocated shortly. During the first phase of this project, 1,000 lots were developed at the scheme which is situated aback of the National Stadium, a 15-minute drive to the capital city.
“There is now a high demand for more lands from re-migrants, with the increasing number of applications which we are receiving…this shows that persons want to come home and this is because they have confidence in Guyana’s economy,” Ali was quoted as saying by GINA.

Another “One Stop Shop” was held on Monday at the Guyana National Stadium during which 800 house lots were distributed. President Donald Ramotar said the exercise is part of his administration’s move to ensure people’s social needs are met.
Addressing a gathering at the event, Ramotar said owning one’s home provides a feeling of security and contentment. He said home ownership “is also very vital from the point of view of our economy as well, because I strongly believe that when you have a satisfied population, that you will be able to produce more in our society. And as we want to develop our country faster and further, we work on the philosophy that the most important factor for development is our people and therefore, if we want to take our country forward and if we want to end poverty, we have to invest in our people first and foremost.”
Minister Ali said that the East Bank housing drive is progressing rapidly. He pointed out that so far for this year, they have been able to fulfil 97 per cent of the sector’s work programme, which is expected to be completed within a week.
