Government to repair various sports venues in Region 10

Director of Sport Neil Kumar

A number of sports venues across Region 10 would be receiving welcome repairs this year, since government intends to expend some Gy$15 million for such works.

Director of Sport, Neil Kumar, said the money will be used to construct two multi-purpose tarmacs and execute extensive repairs on 10 sporting grounds in Region 10.

Kumar said that, when constructed, the tarmacs will be used to promote sports disciplines such as lawn tennis, volleyball, netball and basketball.

The director of sport said that presently football, basketball and cricket dominate the sporting arena in the region; however, the multi-purpose tarmacs will permit persons to engage in non-traditional sports.

He also posited that the rehabilitation of the grounds will help to take the traditional sports to higher levels.

Kumar noted that the Culture, Youth and Sport Ministry is still in the process of planning, hence the commencement dates for the various projects have not yet been earmarked.

This newspaper was further told that such information, as well as the venues identified for repairs and the areas allocated for the constructing of the two tarmacs, will be divulged to Region 10 residents when the Culture, Youth and Sport Ministry hosts a two-day sports interaction in Linden. A date for that event is yet to be announced.

Kumar noted that the projects would serve to encourage young adults and teenagers to be engaged in meaningful activities.
