– Golden Jaguars continue journey to the 2014 FIFA World Cup
After winning their first two qualifying games of the FIFA 2014 World Cup, Guyana’s national football team, “Golden Jaguars”, were promised “a financial contribution” by the government of Guyana. On Tuesday, at the Guyana National Stadium, Providence, that promise was fulfilled when Presidential Advisory on Empowerment, President of Alpha “The Hammer” United football team, Odinga Lumumba, handed over Gy$300,000 to the Golden Jaguars’ skipper, Chris Nurse.
Lumumba lauded the efforts of the acting president of the Guyana Football Federation, Franklin Wilson, for continuing the process of rebuilding the Guyana football team. He also praised veteran player Charles “Lily” Pollard for plying his experience with the team; and head coach, Trinidadian Jamaal Shabazz, for his dedication to the national team.
Apart from the financial input, three players – Cornelius Allister, Randy Shakes and Leon Cort – received passports which clear the way for them to participate in the team’s upcoming qualifying games.
Head coach of the Golden Jaguars, Jamaal Shabazz, expressed much appreciation to Lumumba for the generous support, and disclosed that was it a difficult time for football in the Caribbean.
“Guyana have two very important qualifying games coming up – against Barbados and Bermuda – and now is not a time for people to be fussing and fighting, but a time for unity. The support will indeed make the work light for the national team,” Shabazz stated.
The team will face off with Barbados on October 7 in Barbados, and on October 11 with Bermuda in Bermuda.
The final two matches are slated for November 11 and 15, with the first match being played in Guyana and the second in Trinidad and Tobago against Trinidad.
