Government announces eight per cent pay hike for public servants

The Bharrat Jagdeo administration on November 3 approved pay increases for a range of traditional public servants as well as workers of the state-run Guyana Sugar Corporation (GuySuCo), hailing the pay hike as an illustration of the strength of the country’s economy at a time when other countries have imposed wage freezes and job cuts.

Over the years, government has imposed pay increases for public servants, but this is usually done at the end of the year.

In a statement, the Government Information Agency (GINA) said that President Jagdeo granted approval for the eight per cent across-the-board increase to be paid to government employees with effect from January 1, 2011. The increase will be payable to all public servants and members of the disciplined services. Teachers will get an additional three per cent across-the-board increase with effect from January 1, 2011 on top of the five per cent increase previously paid by government with effect from the same date, pursuant to the multiyear agreement concluded between the administration and the Guyana Teachers Union (GTU).

According to the GINA statement, the president also granted approval for an additional increase of three per cent to be paid to employees of GuySuCo, who were previously paid a five per cent increase for 2011. “This latest decision by the president would bring the total increase paid for 2011 to all these categories of employees to eight per cent,” the GINA statement added.
