GGMC, Canadian firm sign deal to facilitate manganese, iron exploration

The Guyana Geology and Mines Commission (GGMC) and a private mining firm on Monday signed a licensing agreement that will facilitate exploration for manganese and iron in Regions One and Nine.

Kampta Persaud, manager of GGMC’s Geological Services, and David Fennell and James Crombie of the private mining firm signed the deal. The Canadianbased company, through a Guyanese subsidiary, has been conducting mining operations and exploratory work in Guyana since 1983.

Guyana has several deposits of manganese and iron. Manganese is primarily found in Matthews Ridge and Pipaini in Region One, while iron ore fields are concentrated at the head of the Pomeroon River and in the South Rupununi. Matthews Ridge was named after FPF Matthews, a government economic geologist who first discovered manganese in the area in 1951.
