George dips under five-minute mark in 1500m yet again

– Garraway returns to dominate 100m

Linden’s sensation Cassey George upstaged distance queen Alika Morgan on Sunday, dipping under the five minute mark for the second time this year in the 1500m event when the Athletics Association of Guyana held its second developmental meet at the Guyana Defence Force ground, Camp Ayanganna.
In her second 1500m of the year, George went head-to-head with Guyana’s best and did not disappoint, blowing Morgan away in a time of 04: 52.1s after recording 04: 44.1s in her first 1500m earlier in the year at the junior Carifta trials at the said ground.

Morgan trailed in a distant second, recording a time of 05: 07.1s, while 1500m junior Carifta bronze medalist Andrea Foster finished third with a time of 05: 08.7s.
Meanwhile, sprint phenomenon Tevin Garraway made a surprise return to the track to top all under-20 athletes in a time of 10.6s – the fastest of the year – after taking a hiatus from track since the National School Championships last year due to injury and studies for the Caribbean Secondary Examination Certificate (CSEC).
Kevin Abbensetts was second with a time of 10.7s, while Samuel Doris came in third with a time of 10.8s.
Carifta selectee Tirana Mitchell continued to impress with her performances as the under-17 female athlete produced one of her best performances of the year, clocking a time of 24.1s in the 200m.
Avon Samuels, also selected for the junior Carifta games, clocked in second with a time of 24.7s, but returned in the Under-17 400m to clock an impressive time of 58.6s.
Male under-17 sprint Carifta selectee Jason Yaw stocked up well against some senior competitors as he came a close second to Akeem Stewart who won the event in a time of 21.1s. Yaw clocked 21.6s for second, while Elton Bollers finished third in 21.8s.
Maurice Gibson leapt his way to a triple jump win with a leap of 13.08m ahead of Troy Williams and Leon Bishop with distances of 12.87m respectively, as Bishop jumped the distance on his last jump for third, while Williams jump the distance on his second try which got him the second spot.
In the discus throw, Julio Sinclair dominated with a throw of 39.38m, while Royston Ross (36.65m) and Cordel English (36.39m) came second and third respectively.

In the female version of the discus throw, Latoya Rodney easily won the event with a throw of 27.25m, leaving Rushell Cuffy in second with a throw of 25.02m, while Jimeal Richmond was third with a throw of 23.55m.
Returning to the track, Alita Moore destroyed the women’s 100m field with a time of 11.7s after a perfectly executed drive phase. Tasnica Lovell was second with a time of 12.8s.
National School championship 800 and 1500m gold medalist, Devaughn “Scooby” Barrington ran away with the 800m in event in a time of 02: 00.2s, while Ornesto Thomas finished closely behind in a time of 02: 00.3s.
Two-time Carifta 1500m gold medalist Jevina Straker won the women’s 800m ahead of George in a time of 02:19.3s, while George ran 02:20.6s.
Meanwhile, the day’s events were capped off with the 4x400m event, which was won by the University of Guyana in a time of 3:33.8s.
