The Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM) said it has commenced the printing of the Official List of Electors (OLE) for the upcoming general and regional elections.

The OLE is being printed on specially designed water-marked paper procured from CODE Inc, a reputable overseas supplier which deals in sensitive election materials, GECOM said in a statement. Electronic copies of the OLE were given by GECOM Chairman Dr Steve Surujbally to Leader of the People’s National Congress Reform (PNCR) Robert Corbin and People’s Progressive Party/ Civic (PPP/C) General Secretary and presidential candidate, Donald Ramotar.

Electronic copies of the document were likewise given to the other parties which were represented in the recently dissolved Parliament. Other political parties are being provided with copies of the certified OLE upon request.

Meanwhile, GECOM said that the Logistics Division of its secretariat has proposed a list of 2075 polling stations to be established at 991 polling places in all of the 10 electoral districts across Guyana to facilitate voting on Election Day. Copies of the proposed list have been given to the GECOM commissioners for them to study and offer their comment. Thereafter, the proposed list of polling stations will be discussed at the level of the commission with a view to bringing it to finality.

On another issue, GECOM said it continues to move ahead with its nationwide series of two-day training sessions targeting personnel who will be employed to work throughout Guyana on Election Day. The sixth leg in the series was conducted simultaneously on October 15 and 16, 2011 in electoral districts eight and nine. Additionally, a second round of training of persons to be employed to work in District Four has commenced.

This second round, which was conducted simultaneously at 13 locations on the East Coast of Demerara on October 15 and 16 is intended to ensure that the full complement of the workforce required to work on Election Day will be appointed. The second round of training will continue on October 22-23 in Georgetown and on the East Bank of Demerara. This will mark the completion of training of persons to be appointed to work on Election Day.
