GCC beat Old Fort 6-2

Farfan and Mendes First Division Men’s Hockey League…

GCC’s Orland Semple commands as three Old Fort players are in hot pursuit

In their second round clash with Old Fort in the Farfan and Mendes Men’s first division hockey league, GCC emerged victors by a convincing 6-2 margin to lead the points standing midway through the round.
The relentless GCC strikers pressed the game into the Old Fort half from the opening whistle, but squandered two early chances as both Orland Semple and Kevin Spencer missed the target in what seemed to be certain goals.  Spencer however, would be the first to score as he evaded a swarm of Old Fort defenders and slotted the ball into an empty goal six minutes from the start.
After a goal drought of 25 minutes when Chris Low and Aderemi Simon seemed to settle Old Fort into a better flow of play, GCC captain Devin Hooper was first onto a loose rebound in the circle to put his side up by two.  As the half wound down, Semple would redeem his earlier failed attempt by smashing a shot into the net from a quick GCC left side attack to give the Bourda boys a 3-0 lead at the half.
GCC’s Leonard George continued the club’s run of form as the overlapping left back found himself unmarked at the top of the scoring circle in the 44th minute and sent a scorching shot past young goalkeeper David Williams who had been doing a fine job for Old Fort despite the score line.
Old Fort managed to secure a penalty stroke as the ever-dangerous Simon was fouled en route to goal in the 55th minute which Simon converted with ease to take the score to 4-1.
GCC’s right back Rafael DeGroot got into the action with a far post-deflection and Semple added a second with an astute deflection off a Spencer pass to add two more to the Bourda total.  Michael Bourne managed to pull one goal back for Old Fort, but the final whistle met the score at 6-2 to GCC.
The competition will continue at Bourda on Sunday with the Hikers taking on Old Fort at 16:00 hours.
