Fung-A-Fat and Joseph make Guyana proud

Dear Editor,
I congratulate Mary Fung-A-Fat and Nyron Joseph for their wonderful performances at the Caribbean Area Squash Association (CASA) Junior Championships in Liguanea Club, Kingston Jamaica. The pair, emerging atop of their categories (at the tournament) is not something to be taken lightly. I am so proud of them, and I know that they will make further progress in their disciplines, thereby bringing even more glory to Guyana. I mean they have what it takes.
When I think of Mary Fung-A-Fat and Nyron Joseph, I feel somewhat peeved. They are not quite ‘household’ names.
If I am doubted, I challenge readers to go around, asking for sporting heroes in Guyana.
I am sure that the response will be filled with personal ties of cricketing fame. So that is why I am making so much of these two stars, who really excelled at the (CASA) Junior Caribbean Championships.
Fung-A-Fat captured the Girls Under-19 title by defeating compatriot Ashley De Groot in the all-Guyanese girls Under-19 final. So this was really a double treat for Guyana.
It gives credence to the calibre of the Guyanese contingent. In fact, Fung-A-Fat’s win took her to a fourth Junior CASA title.
De Groot meanwhile was hoping to gain her maiden title. As a pertinent footnote, Fung- A-Fat was seeded number one at the Junior CASA this year and played the entire tournament without losing a single game, in the three-best-of-five format.
As for 15-year-old Nyron Joseph, he is truly a local squash star, and now he is expanding his fame.
The lad produced a magnificent come-from-behind victory in the Boys U-17 final, stunning Bermuda’s d’Vario Thompson, in capturing the title. Joseph lost the first two games, but never surrendered, and eventually prevailed.
Mind you, Joseph did the same in his semi-final match against Trinidad and Tobago’s Nku Patrick. Talk about nerve! Editor, outside of cricket and football, aspiring sportsmen and women really have a lot of challenges.
It seems as if they are given left-overs from the public, where sponsorship is concerned.
I am hoping for a new mindset. I am also hoping and asking that the relevant authorities treat these stars as heroes. They should be afforded some kind of celebrity treatment – from airport to home; publicity and commendations etc. They deserve all the accolades possible.
Yours truly,
Krishna Rampat
