Fun and Educational

‘Kids Today, Leaders Tomorrow’, a new TVG children’s programme, makes learning fun

Recognised as a pioneer children’s programme in Guyana, ‘Kids Today, Leaders Tomorrow’ (KTLT) combines education and entertainment for nursery and primary students.

Learning is fun on KTLT

KTLT is a pre-recorded, one hour TV programme produced by Ms Robin St. Marthe. It is aired on TVG Channel 28 in Georgetown and Essequibo, and Channel 12 in Berbice on Saturdays at 11am and rebroadcast on Wednesdays at 4pm, and Fridays at 8:30am.

Having fun on set

The children’s show, which appeals to ages 4 to 11, aims to make learning fun with its holistic, well-thought-out programmes presented to get children active – not only physically, but mentally.
KTLT’s interactive, educational activities and teaching techniques, which are backed by childhood-development principles and quality research, are being used successfully in many classrooms around the country.

Role play is an active, social activity used to help children reflect on and develop their knowledge of a topic

Consisting of four main segments geared towards developing cognition, ‘Kids Today, Leaders Tomorrow’ provides insight to parents/guardians on how to effectively use its teaching methodologies at home. Subject areas covered include craft, proper hygiene, storytelling, English, science and math.
A special segment features guests (such as local celebrities, famous personalities and others) who read to the children or be interviewed by them on the show. What is unique about this segment is that all the questions asked, based on their understanding of the person and their roles, are composed by the children participating on the show. This ultimately means, as is substantiated by overwhelming response from viewers, that the programmes are relatable to children as they are done by children.

Craft segment

KTLT is hosted by Ms Taneka Sanchara, the director of Unique Play School & Daycare which was recently recognised by the Ministry of Social Protection’s Childcare Services as being one of 13 schools licensed to operate in Guyana, and Ms Kimell Thomas, a practising teacher for over 13 years and a social worker for four years. Thomas currently serves as a welfare officer at Stephen’s Primary, providing guidance, counselling and support to children and their parents.

Learning about shapes on the show

The children participating on KTLT are drawn from various schools across the country. They are excited about the project and always eager to explore new ideas for the show.
According to the show’s producer, Ms Robin St. Marthe, since KTLT’s first showing in July 2017, it has received “great feedback from both kids and adults”.
“We also receive positive responses from head teachers and the teaching community, which would give pointers to help make the shows even more ‘edutaining’ – this we are grateful. Going forward, we want to have a KTLT Club where we can compete in debates, have those who pass through teach others, and ultimately grow up to be the leaders of this nation. As it is right now, there is so much potential and we are going to keep going,” St. Marthe declared.
This year, KTLT was part of GBTI’s Early Savers Summer Camp, where its teachers hosted literacy, art and craft sessions with the camp.
