Friends die in Tuschen smash-up

An evening of fun last Tuesday ended tragically at Tuschen, East Bank Essequibo when two young men died after their vehicle collided with another car while they were on their way home.

Dead: Businessman Tameshwar Persaud, called “Navin”

Tameshwar Persaud, known as ” Navin”, 27, a businessman of Lot 7 Cornelia Ida public road, West Coast Demerara, and 20- year- old Ramraj Ravindra Azeez, called ” Ameer”, a bus conductor of Bus Shed Road, Anna Catherina, West Coast Demerara, died at around midnight while receiving treatment at the Leonora Cottage Hospital after they were rushed to that institution by public-spirited citizens. The two friends were travelling in a burgundy coloured Toyota Carina AT192 car, PLL 9836, when they collided with a Toyota Spacio, HB 8575, travelling in an easterly direction on the West Coast Demerara public road.

The driver of the Toyota Spacio was identified as 50- year- old Derrick Lewis of Farm, East Bank Essequibo. He is nursing injuries at the Georgetown Public Hospital and his condition is listed as serious. Guyana Times International understands that Persaud and Azeez were out having a few beers in Greenwich Park, East Bank Essequibo, and may have been under the influence of alcohol when the accident occurred.

Dead: Minibus conductor Ramraj Ravindra Azeez, called “Ameer”

Police reported that the fatal accident occurred at Vergenoegen, EBE at about 23: 00h, and resulted in the deaths of driver Tameshwar Persaud and occupant Ramraj Ameer, and injury to driver Derrick Lewis. Investigations revealed that motor vehicles PLL 9826 and HB 8575 were proceeding in opposite directions along the Vergenoegen public road when they collided. Tameshwar Persaud, driving PLL 9826, and occupant Ramraj Ameer received injuries. They were taken to the Leonora Cottage Hospital where they were pronounced dead on arrival.

Derick Lewis, driving HB 8575, also suffered injuries and was transferred to the GPHC, where he is currently in critical condition. Nadine Persaud, sister of Tameshwar, explained that she was at home when she received a call informing her of the accident. Family members rushed to the Leonora Cottage Hospital, where they were greeted with the unfortunate news of Tameshwar’s death.

The sister said that it is a custom for her brother to go out with his friends and have a grand time, but this was his last outing.

Vishnu Persaud explained that upon reaching the hospital he was told that his son Tameshwar was receiving treatment, but later a police officer told him his son was dead. The grieving father related that Tameshwar operated a liquor store and taxi service, and would normally take Tuesday off to go out with friends.

He said that his son’s death comes at a time when predominantly youths are being killed on Guyana’s roads. He said that as a young man growing up, he had taken some chances, but there is a vast difference between the time when he was young and the present time. He also encouraged youth to heed their parents’ advice and gain a proper education. Persaud was described as a loving, caring and dedicated youngster. He leaves to mourn his parents and one sister.

And over at the home of Ravindra Azeez, relatives flocked to offer their support to the bereaved family. Khemraji Azeez, mother of the dead Ravindra, said her son was very humble and was a very close friend of Tameshwar. She said that when she heard he was dead, she fell into a state of shock and disbelief.
