Culture, Youth and Sport Ministry’s Parliamentary Secretary Steve Ninvalle stated in an exclusive interview with this publication last Friday that the holding of the Friday Night Fights is merely for boxers to improve their game.
Ninvalle stated that the only way boxers can get better is by constantly competing, and the Friday Night Fights are a wonderful launching pad for this.
He stated that there are normally about six boxing cards in the year, which is not enough for the boxers if they are going to compete at international competitions.
Ninvalle said that the Friday Night Fights, which are the brainchild of president of the Guyana Boxing Board of Control, Peter Abdool, was birthed last year (2010).
He said the fights are possible through a merger of the professional and amateur boards, along with the Culture, Youth and Sports Ministry and the National Communications Network (NCN).
The parliamentary secretary stated that the amateur association receives a sum of money from the professional board, and this assists with offsetting some of their expenses for these fights. He said Guyana Amateur Boxing Association (GABA) also contributes whatever they can to assist with facilitating boxers from around the country.
Ninvalle said that, on rare occasions, fights would be held outside Georgetown, maybe in Linden, but not in Regions Six, Eight or Nine, but thanks to the Culture, Youth and Sport Minister, Dr Frank Anthony, they will be able to do so in 2011, since they were given a collapsible ring, allowing them to host competitions in the regions mentioned above.
Friday Night Fights will be held once every month, and will accommodate boxers from around Guyana.
