Four charged for Cummings Lodge robberies

Three men have been remanded to prison, while a fourth one has been placed on Gy$200,000 bail in connection with the Cummings Lodge, East Coast Demerara robberies which occurred over the weekend.

Orlando Samuels and Jamaal Munroe, both of “C” Field Sophia, along with Ricardo April and Quacy Bentick of Alexander Street, Kitty Georgetown made their first appearance before Magistrate Alex Moore in the Sparendaam Magistrate’s Court.

They were all charged with the offence of robbery under arms. Bentick and April were also jointly charged for robbery with violence.

Bentick was placed on Gy$100,000 bail for each charge, and will make his next court appearance on March 12. Samuels, Munroe, and April on the other hand will return to court on April 4. The four men reportedly committed two separate robberies on Monday last at Cummings Lodge. Upon their arrest an unlicensed .38 revolver, with two matching rounds, was recovered.

The men were accused of robbing Vivian Rookhum and his brother Frederick Cheong of Ninth Field, Cummings Lodge.

According to police reports, the brothers were in their home when they were confronted by two men armed with a handgun and a cutlass.

The suspects reportedly gained entry into the premises through an open door. During the ordeal, the men relieved the University of Guyana students of their jewellery, a laptop computer, two cell phones, and a bicycle. They then used the bicycle to make good their escape.

The accused were also fingered in another robbery committed on businessman Mohamed Khan at his residence in Seventh Field. Reports stated that Mohamed had just driven into his yard in his motor lorry when he was confronted by three men, two of whom were armed with a handgun and cutlasses. They reportedly carted off a bag containing US$ 16,440 and Gy$ 255,000.

Based on the quick response from the police and moreso information, a search was conducted on a house at Fourth Field, Cummings Lodge. During the search, six men and two women, along with the firearm and ammunition, were discovered. The men were arrested, and the gun and ammunition were seized.
