Former Chief Executive Officer of the Guyana Sugar Corporation (GuySuCo), Dr Rajendra Singh is refuting an article published in the Kaieteur News edition of September 4, 2015, concerning the importation of a used 2003 vehicle.

“The article is incomplete and misleading,” said Dr Singh.

The KN article stated that “extremely reliable sources have informed this newspaper that there is a provision within Dr Singh’s contract with GuySuCo which allows him to be exempt from duties on another vehicle. But this came with a condition.”

Dr Singh said while his contract did include the provision as quoted in the KN article, on the contrary, there is no provision that requires the Board of GuySuCo to make a written request for the exemption from duty.

Dr Singh pointed out that when he imported the vehicle, he made a request to the Guyana Revenue Authority (GRA) and provided the Authority with a copy of his contract, which included the provision for duty exemption for the second vehicle.

According to Dr Singh, the GRA then issued an approval letter to him for the 12-year-old used vehicle to be exempted from duty. The letter quoted the relevant sections of the laws governing the exemption from duty.

The approval letter was copied to the Minister of Agriculture, the Chairman of GuySuCo’s Board and other relevant officers of the GRA.

“It seems as if this is yet another article by the Kaieteur News to continue their smear campaign against me,” added Dr Singh.
