National 5000m and 1500m record holder Cleveland Forde made an emphatic debut at the Inter-Service Athletics Championships this week, winning all three of his events in record time and comfortably capturing the overall male champion athlete title.
After winning the men’s 5000m on Wednesday, October 5, Forde returned on the final day of the competition to punctuate his debut with two awesome wins in the men’s 1500m and 800m respectively.
The 26-year-old three- time junior CARIFTA 5000m champion overcame strong opposition and gutsy running to win the 1500m in 4:09.4 seconds, ahead of a Guyana Police Force (GPF) athlete who clocked 4:13 and GDF’s Carlon Halley (4:14.2).
Forde’s other teammate, Tyshon Bentick, finished in fourth place.
And although many cynics doubted his ability to win at 800m, which requires both sprinting and middle distance skills, Forde won that as well, defeating defending champion Trevor Scotland and breaking his record in the process.
Forde told Guyana Times International Sport earlier in the week that he had joined the GDF just over four months ago, and apart from being an athlete, he had been helping out in the coaching department with the middle distance athletes.
