The three main political groups – People’s Progressive Party/ Civic, A Partnership for National Unity and Alliance For Change— and The United Force (TUF) have been cleared to contest both the general and regional elections, while a small group in Berbice, the East Berbice Development Association (EBDA), got the nod to compete for the regional elections in Region Six.
Two other small parties that had submitted lists on Nomination Day last week have been disqualified, sources at the Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM) said. These are: Horizon And Star (HAS), headed by Hubert Maloney, and Fundamental Structure Group (FSG), headed by Anthony Snow.
In a statement Sunday, GECOM said it is currently engaged with the examination of the Lists of Candidates which were submitted to Chief Election Officer Gocool Boodoo on Nomination Day. The commission said these seven parties had submitted their respective National Top-up, Geographical Constituency, and Regional Lists of Candidates, along with their respective titles and symbols and the names of their appointed party agents.

Mohamed Nasir did not submit lists of candidates for his party – the United Muslim Party, hence the party did not qualify to contest the elections. Maloney, who submitted lists for the Horizon And Star had failed to submit a “correct” logo for his party by the deadline, so his party was also disqualified. The FSG was in a race to meet the deadline of midnight Sunday, but according to well-placed sources at GECOM the party was unlikely to make it.
According to GECOM, the examination of the lists is being conducted by Boodoo and a team of designated staff, including the commission’s legal officer, from GECOM Secretariat, to ensure that all of the lists meet all statutory requirements in order for the relevant political parties to contest the elections.
“Whereas the FSG has submitted lists to contest the National Top-up seats, and 13 of the Geographical Constituency seats in six regional elections, the EBDA would, by desire, be contesting the regional election in Electoral District Six only.” The elections commission said manual examination of the lists of candidates resulted in the identification of defects in the lists submitted by four parties.
All of the concerned parties were informed of the identified defects for them to take remedial action.
