Fisherman stabbed to death by lover’s boyfriend

A fisherman died on Saturday morning after he was stabbed in his back, at about 00:55 hrs, by his lover’s boyfriend. The incident occurred at a shop in Sara Johanna, East Bank Demerara.

Dead is Randy Joseph of Westminster, West Bank Demerara. Four persons — the alleged killer, the lover, and her two brothers — are in custody at the Brickdam police station, assisting with investigations.

According to relatives, the 19-year-old fisherman went to see his girlfriend when he was attacked.

The Prittipaul Singh Investments employee had returned from sea only Friday, after a month-long tour of duty.

Joseph’s cousin, Shantel Joseph, said that she had last seen him at about 18:30 hrs after he left “to go to see a girl by the name of Nicola, who worked at a bar in Sara Johanna.”

According to Shantel, the girl had kept calling Randy throughout the day.

“His (Randy) child mother and daughter from Suriname came to see him… this girl keep calling, and me tek the phone and give Cindy (child mother) and them two mouth ketch,” the cousin said.

Shantel said that, at around 01:00 hr, she received a call from ‘Nicola,’ stating that her cousin had been stabbed.

Upon arriving on scene, the cousin said, she saw Randy’s body lying in a pool of blood with a deep wound on his chest.

Shantel said she later learnt from ‘Nicola’ that another patron at the bar had mistakenly stabbed Randy.

The knife the suspect used protruded from the fisherman’s back through his chest. It was later retrieved by police.

Shantel added that another patron told her that her cousin was sitting outside; and after being stabbed, Randy ran into the bar for help.

However, before the police could arrive, Joseph succumbed to his injuries. The entire family had only recently relocated to Westminster from the North West District. Dave Persaud, a relative of Joseph’s who also works at Prittipaul Singh Investments, said that on several occasions he had warned Randy about ‘Nicola’.

A post-mortem examination will be performed on Joseph’s body on Monday, while police are continuing their investigations.
