First National Dress Competition staged

Simpli Royal hosted its first National Dress Competition at the National Cultural Centre on Saturday, February 12th. Some of Guyana’s youngest designers showcased their fine work. Copping first prize of Gy$150,000 was Queen’s College CAPE student Randy Madray with his excellent design.

The main objective of this activity was to have designers create a national dress that can be recognized; and moreso, one that Guyanese can relate to.

According to Simpli Royal’s Chief Executive Officer Pamela Dillon, the nine designers are well talented and have created some excellent pieces; but on the night of the competition, only one “winner” could have won.

She disclosed that the others are all “winners in their own right”. “We will continue to work with them to make certain that their work reaches international standard,” Dillon related. She disclosed that each of the ten other designers has hidden talent that Simpli Royal will expose.

Dillon said that the first time she met Madray was during the Ms Earth Pageant, in which he was one of the most promising designers; and from that point, she knew Madray had the charisma and determination to succeed.

She also disclosed that Madray’s winning entry will be showcased at the “Miss Guyana Earth”, slated for the latter part of 2011.

The other designers who showcased their creations were Kurt Stephenson, Karen Ross, Carol Fraser, Rollex Scott, Quinton Pearson, Wynette James, Vinu Mattan and Vashti Harlequin.
