Public Works Minister Robeson Benn and Minister in the Finance Ministry, Juan Edghill were recently honoured for their role in the Women in Aviation stamp launch on October 9 as part of World Postal Day observances.
That event saw Guyana’s first female commercial pilots Beverly Drake and Cheryl Pickering-Moore getting postal stamps in their honour from the Guyana Post Office Corporation.
The ministers were presented with plaques showcasing the first day covers of the stamps by Attorney Everette Richards who represented the stamp honourees.
They both expressed delight at recognition of their efforts in making the stamp launch a reality.
Pickering-Moore and Drake were among the eight Guyanese women pioneers in the aviation industry who were honoured recently for their bravery in breaking the gender barrier in professional aviation in the 1960s.
The two women made history as a result of their commitment and dedication in the industry and their faces are now featured on Gy$20 and Gy$80 stamps, which were revealed during the tribute ceremony, as the first stamps in a series to honour the group.
The other six women to be similarly honoured are: Feriel Ally, Barbara Adams, Williette Gardener, and Sandra Persaud. (GINA)
