Thousands of Essequibians Saturday morning converged at the Anna Regina Car Park in Region Two in show of their support for the re-election of Peoples Progressive Party/Civic (PPP/C) at the November 28 polls. The rally was chaired by Finance Minister Dr Ashni Singh who did an excellent job, much to the delight of the large gathering.
Region Two Chairman, Alli Baksh; National Toshoa Council Chairman, Yvonne Pearson; assistant youth director, Daveanand Ramdatt and Darthmouth Neighbourhood Democratic Chairman, Cornel Damon outlined to party supporters and well wishers the tremendous transformation and developments in the areas of infrastructure, education, health care, housing, agriculture and the business sectors that have afforded Essequibians to enjoy a better and comfortable standard of living. They all noted that Essequibo once deemed the “Cinderella County” has now been transformed to the “Princess County” due to rapid developments and investments under the PPP/C administration.
Son of former president Dr Cheddi Jagan, Cheddi “Joey” Jagan Jr made the crowd roar in approval when he declared that the massive turn out at the rally is a fulfillment of his father’s legacy. He said, the crowd is a reflection of his father’s legacy and desire for everyone to display “love, peace and togetherness”.
“I am so happy to see thousands show up here today, I can assure you that my father’s desire has been fulfilled, freedom for Guyana has come a far way; both my parents have worked tirelessly.” Jagan said there were many achievements under the PPP/C government and called on Essequibians to support the party’s presidential candidate.
President Bharrat Jagdeo said the “PPP/C has stood the test of time, inheriting a completely shattered country in 1992, and putting it back on the road of progress and development”.
“We as a party have managed to restore hope in this country and provide citizens with a better standard of living.” He cautioned supporters about some of the “gimmicks” of the other political parties that will be contesting the 2011 elections, pointing out that the entire country was neglected, moreso, the indigenous population.
