The education minister acknowledged that the ministry, like others in the Caribbean and further afield, is facing a major challenge in the areas of Mathematics and English as far as the performance of their students were concerned.
Reflecting on the year when she wrote the Caribbean Examination Council (CXC) in 1992, Manickchand told the Parliament that the pass rate in English was reported at 9.8 per cent, while the pass rate for Mathematics stood at 18 per cent as she noted that the challenge to perform well continues to this day.
“This is a problem that Guyana is struggling with and we are going to continue to put resources towards this area,” the minister said as she noted that the budget was crafted to meet the needs of a large section of the population.
Speaking generally, Manickchand, who is a former human services minister, has also reported to the National Assembly that more money will go to more people in the country, which will aid their personal development.
