Fernandes brings glory to Guyana

Dear Editor,
She has been at her game in a most professional manner, and it is continuing to pay off. I am referring here to Guyana’s number one squash player, who thrashed the Barbadian, for the ladies’ title, at the 2012 Caribbean Squash Championship in Trinidad and Tobago. The triumph is the lass’ fourth title at the championship.
This is not a surprise to me. This Guyanese is currently ranked the 73rd in the world, and she proved why. During the tournament, she was unstoppable, and in the final, she won impressively in straight sets (12/ 10, 11/ 2, 11/ 1). To get to the final, the 29-year-old Guyanese demolished all her opponents 3/ 0 – not dropping a single set either. In the first round, the victim was a Barbadian (11/ 2, 11/ 4, 11/ 1).
This allowed her a quarter final berth, where Nadia McCarthy from Barbados (again) was vanquished (11/ 4, 11/ 0, 11/ 5). Semi-final victory was against Trinidadian, who fought in vain (11/ 6, 11/ 4, 11/ 5). So, congratulations are very much in order.
In Guyana, large crowds do not flock the game, and even at the international level, Guyanese are not very much into the sport. I guess this is really a setback, especially when there is a bonafide top class player. This 29-year-old squash champion is a special person. She is very classy and should be invested in. Guyana’s known sporting heroes are mostly men.
This here is like a damper too. Maybe, this can change if various bodies can start using the Caribbean Squash champion to popularise the game. It is a thought worth considering.

Squash patron,
Amelie Jordan
