Father on bail after wounding son who stole his car

A father was on July 12 granted bail by acting Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry for allegedly lashing his son with a chopper.

Shivacar Kelowan of John Street, Campbellville, Georgetown made an appearance at that Georgetown Magistrate’s Court to answer to the charge of unlawful and malicious wounding.

He pleaded not guilty to the charge, which stated that on July 12, he unlawfully wounded his son, Kevin Kelowan.

In presenting the prosecution’s case, prosecutor Lionel Harvey told the court that the defendant and the virtual complainant (VC), Kevin Kelowan, are father and son. He said that, on the day in question, an argument ensued between the two and as a result the defendant picked up a chopper and dealt the VC a lash to his ear. As a result, the VC had to receive medical attention.

The matter was reported to the police and the defendant was arrested and charged.

The defendant asked the magistrate if he could “say a few words”, and after being allowed, he explained that his son is not the owner of a driver’s licence and normally goes driving his (the father) car. The father explained that on more than one occasion he took the car unknowing to him and went driving around. The man stated that his son was recently picked up by the police for driving without a licence and was later released. The father further stated that in the wee hours of July 12, the son again took the vehicle unknowing to him. He said that when his son returned with the vehicle he confronted him and an argument ensued.

Despite the prosecution’s objection to bail, the magistrate granted the defendant $30,000 bail. It was ordered that the father move from the premises until the completion of the case.
