EZjet must be applauded

Dear Editor,

I write to applaud the new charter airline service that will fly the JFK-Timehri route with effect from December 16. I thank Guyana Times newspaper for providing readers the good news. This service is badly needed. A daily service is terrific. I applaud the new Donald Ramotar led government for granting the approval and the company, for this risky undertaking.

Airlines have not been doing well in recent times and appreciation must be expressed to EZjet owners for this huge investment. Thank you Sonny Ramdeo, CEO of the company, for initiating this service! Guyana desperately needs this service, in light of shortage of seats from the other carriers traversing the JFK Timehri route, especially for the holiday season, because those Guyanese who wish to go home are stuck for lack of seats. EZjet will fill the void.

EZjet must be encouraged to succeed as it will inevitably benefit all passengers.

Competition is good and results in lower prices, leading to more passengers going home. It is hoped that the charter will expand into Toronto to serve the large diaspora there.

The airline industry is an important part of the country’s transport infrastructure and the economy. Directly and indirectly, airlines affect every segment of the population, including the poor and the middle classes. Every Guyanese who goes home spends over US$ 1200, boosting the economy in a variety of ways.

Spending is critical for progress and to keep the economy growing. The spread effects of money spent in Guyana are humongous. It is multiplied several times as the money is recycled. In addition, the government collects departure taxes at the airport. And taxi drivers get the opportunity to boost their income; making so many other lives much better.

The government should find ways to assist (through jet fuel subsidies or lower prices, landing fees, and security arrangement to prevent drug trafficking, etc) EZjet and other Guyanese owned carriers wishing to enter the market. Other nations provide some sort of assistance to such carriers. It is hoped that EZjet can become an approved carrier for the nation if its service is on par or above those of the other airlines.

Yours truly,

Vishnu Bisram
