Exciting T20 cricket in New York to celebrate Guyana’s Independence

Dear Editor:

The Co-operative Republic of Guyana will on May 26th, 2016 celebrate its Golden Jubilee of Independence. Jubilee celebrations are planned for Guyana as well as the various Diasporas.

The New York City celebration will take place from June 4 – 12, 2016. It would be an unprecedented display of Guyana’s illustrious history, rich culture and national pride. The activities in the New York City area from June 4 – 12 include a unity concert, soccer match for youths and a parade on June 12th to conclude the celebration.

This celebration will be graced with the presence of many dignitaries from Guyana and the USA; including the President of Guyana, His Excellency, Brigadier David Granger and Prime Minister, Hon. Moses Nagamootoo

However, a celebration of Guyana’s culture would not be complete without cricket, which is Guyana’s greatest pastime. There will be a President’s Cup, T20 tournament among the three counties; Berbice, Demerara and Essequibo. Time is of the essence; hence, there will be only 2 games. There will be a draw to decide which team will automatically play the final match against the first game. .

The games are schedule to be played on Saturday, June 4th, 2016 at Idlewild Park, located at: 223rd Street and 147th Avenue in Rosedale, Queens NY, starting at 9am.

The organising committee therefore takes great pleasure in inviting everyone to participate in this 50th Independence Anniversary celebration cricket match.

Additionally, anyone who wishes to get involved and be a part of this celebration, please contact the game coordinator, Rudy Persaud (917-682-6142) or the Chair of the Sports sub-committee of the NYC Jubilee Committee, Omotola Goulding  (347) 564-3659.

Yours sincerely,

Rudy Persaud
