Ex-policeman, barber shot in failed execution

An ex-policeman and a barber were on Wednesday evening shot and injured after two men entered the Professional Cut Barber Shop at Railway Line, Kitty and opened fire. The incident occurred about 18: 30h.Maniram “Tyrone” Persaud, an ex-policeman, 32, of Lot 78 La Grange, West Bank Demerara was reportedly in a critical condition at the Georgetown Public Hospital nursing more than seven gunshot wounds to his neck, chest and abdomen.
The other man, Kenta “Imty” Gobin of Lot 94 Meadow Brook Gardens, who received a gunshot wound to his leg, was late Wednesday evening also receiving medical attention at the GPHC. He was listed as stable. According to information, two men appeared at the barber shop on a CG motorcycle, parked and entered the shop under the pretext of waiting for a hair trim.
Upon entry, one of the men pulled out a handgun from his pocket and opened fire on the two men. From all indications, Persaud, who was in the barber’s chair, was apparently the targe,t since most of the gunshots were in his direction.
Minutes after the ordeal, the two perpetrators made good their escape while the two injured men were picked up and rushed to the GPHC for treatment. As they arrived at the medical facility, Persaud was taken for emergency surgery, as he was severely injured.
Later in the evening at the GPHC, relatives and close friends of the men flocked the facility to enquire about their faith. Two young men claimed that they were in the vicinity of the barber shop when they heard gunshots and shortly after they saw two men escaping on a motorcycle.
None of them could have given a clear recount of what transpired.
Robbery was ruled out since the men’s personal belongings were intact. Some of the wailing relatives said upon receiving the news, they rushed to the hospital in good faith. As the mother of Persaud arrived at the facility, she broke down in tears and was comforted by other relatives and friends.
A police rank was heard asking her to calm down, while underscoring that her son was okay in the operating theatre.
The owner of the barber shop, who was reportedly in the shop when the act was committed, was at the hospital.
Police are investigating the shooting incident.
