Every Guyanese expects political leaders to behave in a responsible manner

Dear Editor,

The general and regional elections are due in a matter of days. The president has already made the announcement and not surprisingly, the political campaigns are in full swing. From the looks of things, the campaigns will be robust, and I trust that the parties will deal with issues and not personalities.

Every Guyanese wants to see these elections conducted in the most transparent manner, free from violence and fear. No doubt the observer groups will play an important role in ensuring this happens. I noticed that the Electoral Assistance Bureau will be appointing about 2200 persons to observe the upcoming elections. Independent observers are important in a country’s election. Apart from the local observers, international observers are also crucial in the entire electoral process in verifying and sanctioning the outcome of the polls, so that there would be general acceptance by all contesting parties. Since 1992, we have been getting quite a lot of observer missions coming to Guyana at election time and they have been doing a wonderful job.

It is my hope that all political parties will play their part in ensuring that our country is once more portrayed in a positive light post-2011 election (as was the case in 2006). After the results of the polls are announced, we should accept the results and get back to work to build a better Guyana.

Sincerely,

Rudy Sinclair
