Having been re-constituted on February 22, 2018, and with its first statutory meeting held in late April, the ERC is in the process of reintroducing the body to foster awareness of its twenty-four (24) functions listed in Article 212D of the Constitution, and to seek possible inputs from stakeholders in support of the delivery of its mandate.
The Commission met on Tuesday with representatives of the Hindu, Christian and Islamic constituents at the Herdmanston Lodge in Queenstown, Georgetown; and in fruitful engagements, pertinent concerns were raised, suggestions were offered, and firm commitments were made to work together in the struggle of promoting harmony and good relations across the country.
The constitutional body also met on Monday last with Commissioners appointed by the People’s Progressive Party (PPP) to serve on the Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM). This has been part of the process of investigating the employment practice of GECOM, as requested by the PPP appointed Commissioners Sase Gunraj, Bibi Shadick and Robeson Benn.
The ERC has already met with President David Granger; Leader of the Opposition, Bharrat Jagdeo; the Private Sector Commission, and the Ambassador and team from the European Union (EU).
Other meetings scheduled for this month include with the Inter-Religious Organisation and other religious bodies; cultural organisations, and representatives of women and youth constituents.
