Thirteen-year-old Selina Federicks of Reliance, Essequibo Coast left her family in mourning when she took her own life on Friday evening, March 19th.
Reports are that the Form One secondary school student ended her life in the bottom flat of their home using a piece of cloth and a rope to hang herself.
According to relatives, the child’s action has left them baffled, as the teenager was a very mannerly and friendly individual.
The gruesome discovery was made by her cousin at about 06:00h on Saturday morning.
According to the cousin, she last saw Selina at about 19:30h on Friday. The cousin said she also found a note saying, “I love my sister and father, please forgive me for what I did.” The cousin noted that Selina’s mother died some eight years ago.
According to the cousin, Selina was in high spirits on Friday. She said she saw the young lady cook for her father and accompanied him to the gate as he left for his security job.
“We saw her follow her father to the gate… we did not know that she was up to something”.
A relative said that Selina was observed to be very happy lately, and was reaching out to everyone, which was quite abnormal.
The cousin, who lives in another house in the same yard, said that when Selina’s father came home early on Saturday morning, she heard him calling for Selina to open the door, but there was no answer.
She said she quickly ran to the house and peeped through a crease in the wall, and she saw Selina in the standing position on a chair and shouted to her to open the door for her father.
She noted there was no response, and so she took a closer look and then discovered that Selina was hanging from a piece of cloth tied to the roof.
The door was then broken down and the discovery made public.
Relatives told this newspaper that the child was molested some years ago by a photographer living on the Essequibo Coast.
Police have since visited the scene, and are continuing their investigations.
