Electrifying performances at Rodeo 2013

Rupununi Rodeo 2013 ended with a bang Sunday evening. At yet another fascinating day in the Rupununi, thousands of persons flocked the Triple R Rodeo Ground in Lethem, where they were blown away by the electrifying performances by more than 43 vaqueros, who took the competitions to extreme levels.
The day’s event kicked off with a lot of dust, beginning with the Calf-Roping Competition. Skillfully, the competitors, while still on their horses, roped the calves around their necks. And while persons screamed and yelled as each team competed; the crowd came more alive in the “Bare Back Bronco” Competition, which saw more than 40 competitors, including women.
This segment saw mind-boggling and sometimes very scary stunts, as each competitor struggled to remain on the wildly, thrashing animals to gain points. Some met their targets, some surpassed, while some were severely thrown from the animals the moment they came charging from the chutes.
Female competitors
The only two female competitors in this contest were sadly thrown from their horses and failed to make their eight seconds requirement. While many of the competitors managed to remain on the horses for more than eight seconds, two of the cowboys suffered minor injuries and were treated within minutes by the medical team.
There was much frolic and fun when both male and females converged on the field for the ‘Watermelon-Eating Competition’. Some used their fingers to extract the pulp of the fruits, while others simply plunged their entire faces into the melons.
While the centre of attraction was the “Bare Back Bronco” Competition, scores of tourists from Brazil, the United Kingdom, Germany, the United States of America, India and Europe enjoyed a wide variety of Guyanese and Brazilian cuisines that were up for sale. Others were fascinated by the wide cross-section of artifacts and crafts that were on display in mini-booths that surrounded the ground.
