Election fever running high

Dear Editor,

For the past two months, I have been moving around the country, attending quite a few political meetings and rallies. In the process, I met a few interesting people, including politicians from the various political parties. As much as this is elections time and the fever is high, tempers have so far not flared. This is an excellent sign as it shows a great amount of maturity and responsibility by politicians from the various parties, as they campaign to woo voters into their various camps.

While there was no physical skirmishes among supporters of the various political parties, there was an ugly incident at Buxton during a rally of the ruling PPP/C, where supporters of the opposition, APNU, attempted to disrupt the proceedings. They, however, failed as the rally went on.

Of the three main political parties taking part in the elections, the PPP/C has been drawing the largest crowds, and this shows that the majority of people seem to favour the incumbent, because of its track record. The Alliance for Change, which will be contesting its second election since its formation a few years ago, will fight with the APNU for the second spot, as the people believe that neither this party nor the APNU has the support to dislodge the PPP/C.

The ruling party will be holding two more big rallies at Anna Regina on the Essequibo Coast and Stewartville on the West Coast Demerara. With what I have seen in the past, the showings at these two rallies would most likely be large and thus be able to indicate a clear view of the outcome of the November 28 polls. So let us all wait and watch.

Yours truly,

Observer
