Educational TV channel to officially launch on April 1

President Bharrat Jagdeo will be launching the Educational Television Broadcasting Services (ETBS) to begin broadcasting in Georgetown, at Benab on the Corentyne, and at New Amsterdam and Anna Regina.

According to the Government Information Agency (GINA), the abovementioned areas will be served in phase one of the programme. Content for the television station – Channel 29/Cable 80 – would entail both local and internationally sourced programmes.

ETBS is a satellite open educational network targeting schools, technical and vocational education and training (TVET) institutions, households, community centres, health centres, learning resource centres, and the public.

Programmers will be producing and disseminating television programmes and audio/visual learning materials, television and e-learning materials to be accessed through television sets and computers, as well as facilitating televised educational broadcasts for government ministries and social service organisations using educational/instructional formats addressing diverse learning needs.

Government budgeted $56 million for the channel’s operations in the 2011 budget. The NCERD building will house the audio and video production units, as well as the ancillary resources buildings. The National Frequency Management Unit (NFMU) has been given the spectrum for the transmission, while the National Communications Network (NCN) will provide additional support.

Since it is a new venture for the country, considerable support is being received in many forms from within the Caricom region and further afield from North and South America, Europe, Asia and South Africa.

ETBS is part of government’s thrust to harness the Information Communication Technology (ICT) age, aiding quality education delivery, while enhancing educational standards in Guyana. Phase two of the programme will see coverage extending to Bartica, Linden, Ituniand Kwakwani, Mahdia and Orealla. In the last segment Annai, Aishalton, Karasabai, Mabaruma and Port Kaituma will be covered.
