Education is imperative in moving Guyana forward – Granger

APNU presidential candidate, David Granger

A Partnership for National Unity (APNU) presidential candidate, David Granger in reaching out to his supporters on the Essequibo Coast on Thursday at the party’s Queenstown rally, said his party strongly believes that an educated population will move Guyana forward.

Granger, in his address to some 400 party supporters, said Region Two which is deemed the “Cinderella County”, is far back in developments, and claims that the country’s education system is poor.

This situation, according to Granger is the primary reason many teachers migrate to greener pastures where they are offered better incentives. He said, under a Granger-led administration, teachers will be given the right incentives, and a proper agriculture institute will be constructed on the Essequibo Coast so that children can be trained in the various branches of agriculture.

The APNU presidential candidate said, if his government is given the chance, the sector will be boosted with technical education, lands for agricultural development, provision of one laptop per teacher and better infrastructures at the schools.

Granger said he believes that Essequibo can become the “bread basket of the Caribbean” once more lands are opened up. “You have thousands of acres here, all you need is to develop and establish small cottage industries.” He stressed too that small manufacturing industries can be established to create more jobs for young people.

He stated under his government, if given a chance, citizens will be provided with a modern network of roads, and a better ferry service for passengers plying the Supenaam/ Parika route.

Granger accused the People’s Progressive Party/Civic (PPP/C) of making false promises, and urged his supporters to give deaf ears to the party’s leaders. He also said the party will fight against pirates and will rehabilitate the entire Guyana Defence Force.

Under a Granger administration, he said, aircraft will be provided for officers so that they can constantly monitor Guyana’s boarders.

The party’s prime ministerial candidate, Rupert Roopnarine said should APNU be given a chance to rule Guyana, the party would reduce VAT. He told supporters not to vote for the cup, and said APNU is committed and willing to conduct an audit of all government offices.
