EDI designs to take the stage in Guyana

Tyrone Nelson

In February 2011, a new designer phenomenon will be unleashed in Guyana. From all accounts, it promises to be the hottest fashion craze ever to hit the local shores. This heart-stopping fashion invasion will explode in a kaleidoscope of blinding colours, glitz and ultimate glamour at the Aracari Resort, 160 Plantation Versailles, West Bank Demerara.

This stimulating masterpiece, dubbed EDI Designs (English Duck International Designs), was created and established in 2005, after a young police officer, Tyrone “Dwayne” Nelson, migrated to the land of Barbados, where he further enhanced his studies by pursuing a diploma in business management at the University of the West Indies, and became a model with Ebony Fashion model agency, which is owned and directed by Kingsley Thorne. He went on to grace the catwalk in Jamaica, Trinidad, St Lucia and Barbados, and also became a contestant of the Mr Ebony Pageant.  During this period, this dynamic, artistic and exceptional individual found a talent for fashion within himself that not only gained him recognition within Barbados but around the Eastern Caribbean. He furthered his studies in the business by pursuing a diploma in fashion at the Barbados Community College.

In 2007, EDI Designs was officially launched at the Barbados Manufacturing Expo (BMEX), under the name Evolution. There Nelson’s outstanding and creative work gained the attention of many, and he was offered an opportunity to showcase his style at the Barbados Fashion Week, Caribbean Fashion Week and Style Week Jamaica. With guidance from his personal broker, Mrs Ester, he went on to showcase his creations on the runway in places such as Canada and Spain.

When asked what makes him different from other designers, he replied:  “I think outside the box. I want to take fashion to a new step, especially male clothing that makes males stand out. That’s why I put my creative mind into making male clothing exceptional, not to say that I don’t do the same for females. I put my best in everything I do; and because of that, whatever I produce is always recognisable and pleasing in the eyes of many, regardless of where it is worn”.

Many recognise him for his pointed tip shoes, stylish dressing, dapper personality and sophisticated character.  Nelson has been back home for the past four months.
