The Housing and Water Ministry has said that works under the first phase of its modern East Bank Development Project are moving apace, with approximately 80 per cent work completion. And the ministry is also reporting that the occupancy rates across new schemes have been improving over the years.
Guyanese can look forward to benefiting from an estimated 1,500 new house lots which are to become available by August this year.
Under the plan, the ministry was challenged to provide a total of 15,000 house lots to Guyanese over the next five years.
Housing and Water Minister Irfaan Ali told Guyana Times International on Sunday, May 22, that he is pleased with the progress being made with the project. Ali stated that the contracting staff and ministry officials have been working assiduously, despite minor setbacks, to ensure that Guyanese benefit from the new house lots in a timely manner.
Ali also said that, under the first phase of the project, which is the Eccles Extension, some 900 house lots will become available for allocation by August.
He was convinced that the consuming public would be impressed with the quality of work that has been done by the contractors and his staff. Under the second phase, which is the Herstelling Development component, another 200 house lots will be made available to the consuming public. Works under this phase are also expected to be wrapped up by August month end, but those house lots will become available for allocation in a matter of three weeks.
Meanwhile, construction and design works are ongoing under another component of the East Bank Development Plan, which is the ‘Re- migrants’ Scheme”. A total of 500 lots will also be ready for allocation in two and a- half weeks’ time, even though work is scheduled to be wrapped up as well in a matter of two months’ time. “The demand for these lots under this scheme is inspiring, and I can’t help but mention that, already, the demand has outweighed what we intended to provide initially,” the minister noted.
He said that government is happy with the response that it garnered from Guyanese living abroad, and was heartened by the fact that it citizens who have been living overseas for decades are taking the opportunity to return home.
