Police Constable Ryan Persaud who reportedly struck down a motorcyclist while driving under the influence was on Monday slapped with a causing death by dangerous driving charge and appeared before the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts.
It is alleged that on September 1, about 23:40h on Mandela Avenue, Georgetown, he drove Guyana Police Force minibus PVV 4652 in a manner dangerous to the public whereby causing the death of Akemo Anthony Bristol.
He was previously charged for driving under the influence, but had denied that charge. For that offence, he was released on G$25,000 bail.
On Monday, the Police Prosecutor made no objections to bail. Magistrate Fabayo Azore released Persaud on G$250,000 bail, and the case was adjourned to October 12, 2018.
Guyana Times International previously reported that the Police Constable and Bristol were both travelling along Mandela Avenue when the collision occurred.
The impact reportedly tossed Bristol into a nearby drain while his mangled motorcycle ended up under the minibus.
Bristol was rushed to the Georgetown Public Hospital, where he subsequently died while receiving medical attention.
