Acting Chief Magistrate Sherdel Isaacs-Marcus on Monday remanded the driver and porter who were nabbed by Customs Anti-Narcotics Unit (CANU) ranks on a fertiliser truck in which a large quantity of cocaine and ganja was unearthed.
Remanded were 24-year-old Randy Chester and 45-year-old Christopher Garraway. The men were arrested on Thursday last in a fertiliser-laden truck destined for Berbice, Region Six (East Berbice- Corentyne) along Mandela Avenue, Georgetown.
On Monday, they appeared at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts and both denied the charge which stated that on January 16, 2020 at John Fernandes Container Terminal Road, Mandela Avenue, West Ruimveldt, Georgetown, Garraway supplied to Chester 22 kilograms of marijuana and 2.74 kilograms of cocaine. The other charge stated that on the same day and at the same location, Chester trafficked 22 kilograms of marijuana and 2.74 kilograms of cocaine.
CANU Prosecutor Konyo Sandiford informed the court that on January 16, ranks acting on information, intercepted the truck at Mandela Avenue, Georgetown which was destined for Berbice. Sandiford told the court that a search was carried out on the vehicle and a quantity of marijuana and cocaine were unearthed in two white salt bags.
The Prosecutor indicated to the court that CANU ranks were on site when the narcotics hand-over took place. Sandiford further objected to bail being granted to the duo citing the fact that they implicated each other in the crime. The Magistrate upheld the Prosecutor’s submission and remanded the men to prison. The case will continue on January 29, 2020.
