The man who was driving the car which crashed into a parked lorry, killing two persons on the Corentyne in Berbice last week, was this week placed on $1 million bail.
Navindra Premnauth, also known as Avinash, 25, of Lot 35 Grant 1802 Crabwood Creek, was placed on self-bail on one charge and $1 million bail on the second charge when he appeared before Whim Magistrate, Charlyn Artiga.
The Magistrate had initially suggested $2 million bail on the charges, but defence Attorney Mursaline Bacchus successfully advocated for the bail to be reduced to $1 million.
The charges Premnauth face allege that on April 16 he drove motorcar HC 2217 in a manner dangerous to the public, causing the death of Khemnie Chanchal and Soorajine Surjraj.
As a condition of bail, Premnauth has to report to the Skeldon Police Station fortnightly, and has had to lodge his passport.
Both matters have been transferred to the Number 51 Magistrate’s Court, and will continue on May 23.
Reports are Surjraj, her mother and daughter were passengers in the car when the accident occurred.
The family was returning from the Cheddi Jagan International Airport (CJIA) when the accident occurred.
Reports are that the driver of HC 2217 might have fallen asleep behind the wheel, resulting in him losing control of the vehicle and driving it into lorry GMM 9207 which was parked on the eastern side parapet of the Number 58 Village Public Road, Corentyne.
The body of Surjraj was cremated at the Number 66 Crematorium on Sunday, while Chanchal’s was cremated on Monday.
