Dr Raj Singh, of the Association of Concerned Guyanese (ACG) in the USA, has been re-elected chairman of that body following its annual congress last Sunday in New York. He told Guyana Times International that the congress, constitutionally due before the end of February each year, has seen the election of some new members.

Singh said: “They re-elected the executive committee, (but) there were some changes. Basically, the chairs of all the sub-committees will put together a programme for their sub-committees for the rest of the year.”

Balram Jageswar has been elected ACG’s Vice Chairman; he won against Indra Hardat, who is now the secretary. Colleen Chattergoon was also nominated for that position, but she is now the assistant secretary. Chairing the Education, Media and Public Relations committee is Anter Narine; fund raising chairperson is Colleen Chattergoon; membership is the responsibility of Peter Kistoo; sports is the preserve of Berkley Thomas; and women’s affairs committee is chaired by Bibi Deen.

Next month, each chairperson will unveil their sub-committee’s plans during the ACG’s meeting, and the group will vote to accept each proposal. Each of the elected officials will be responsible for carrying out their proposed plans.

During the February 20 congress, the ACG also highlighted the upcoming general elections in Guyana. The ACG chairman noted that almost everything they do in the upcoming months will be focused on the election. He added that he shared with the group that, as soon as the PPPC party decides on its candidate, the ACG would begin a series of activities to address political and fund raising concerns.

He further added that another aspect the association dealt with is media and communication. He said that there has got to be, on their part, a stepped up effort to deal with negativity that comes out of forums like Kaieteur News, Caribbean Daylight and Demerarawaves. The ACG has launched its website:www.acgny.org, which is aimed at countering some of this negativity and, at the same time, share the party’s programmes and activities with the wider audience. The ACG president urged Guyanese to tap into the resources that are available through the website. It has links to the Office of the President, to the party’s website, to GINA, and also to the Mirror.

The ACG, Singh said, has renewed energy for the upcoming elections, and is encouraging those who are interested in progress and continuing or strengthening democracy in Guyana to follow their work in the next few months. He also encourages all concerned to join the ACG and support the PPPC party and the government.
