On January 26, a team of doctors, headed by Dr Yu Zijun, successfully performed the hospital’s first radical resection of rectal carcinoma, a type of surgery for treatment of rectal cancer. The surgery was performed on a 53-year-old male. Also part of the surgical team were Dr Jin Zhen – an anaesthetist; Dr Geng Shouming – a Gynaecology consultant and Dr Joseph London, a resident surgeon.
Dr Yu Zijun, who spearheaded the team, specialises in this field in China.
Speaking with Guyana Times International, Public Relations Officer (PRO) attached to the LHC, Toshanna Alicock, said the doctors who performed the surgery were very experienced, knowledgeable and committed to their patients. She further encouraged members of the public to take advantage of regular screenings offered at the medical institution. “We’re very pleased that we were able to perform this surgery at the LHC and more so that it was successful. We are encouraging persons to have regular check-ups done to detect cancer in its early stage,” she indicated.
