The wife of a prominent medical doctor at the Georgetown Public Hospital was found bludgeoned to death in her Echilibar Villas, Campbellville home on Tuesday afternoon.

Dead is Sharmaine Monica Doobay, 58, wife of the head of Internal Medicine and consultant cardiologist at the hospital, Dr Ramsundar Doobay. Reports are that her body was discovered lying face down in the kitchen. According to reports, the woman’s head was bashed in and she was lying in a pool of blood.

Relatives said Dr Doobay went home and found the home locked. He then made several calls to summon his wife, but failed to get a response. Fortunately, he was accompanied by relatives, one of whom insisted that they should break the louvre windows on the top flat of the house, the only window at the home not secured with a grill, to get into the home.

A relative explained that, upon entering the house, a search was conducted and the discovery was made. Unconfirmed reports indicate that there were no signs of a robbery. A team attached to the Criminal Investigations Department arrived on the scene some minutes later and conducted a thorough search for fingerprints. The team, assisted by one sniffer dog, combed the area in search of clues. This search went on for several hours.

Meanwhile, a neighbour of the Doobays told Guyana Times International that she became aware that something was amiss when she saw the doctor and another man trying to enter the house at around 17:00h. The neighbour said that Dr Doobay had returned home from work and was overheard calling out for his wife, but he got no response. As such, he and another man took out a few louvre panes from the house to gain entry.

Noting that the murder is baffling, the neighbour said Dr Doobay would normally leave home for work at around 08:00h every day. The neighbour said that the couple lived a very private life, and she last saw the woman at around 14:00h that day at her window.

“I don’t know what really took place… most of the people here have security guards. This entire living quarter is surrounded by guards, and it’s difficult to see someone coming into this place like this,” the neighbour remarked.

The Echilibar Villas, a government-owned housing quarters, is home to several ministers and state officials. At the scene were several top government officials and friends of the Doobays. These included Cabinet Secretary and Head of the Presidential Secretariat Dr Roger Luncheon, Minister within the Ministry of Health Dr Bheri Ramsarran and Director of Medical Services at the Georgetown Public Hospital Dr Madan Rambarran. Additionally, at the scene were a number of doctors from both the GPHC and private medical institutions, as well as other members of the medical fraternity.
