Destitute man drowns in trench

Police are investigating the death of an elderly man whose body was found in a trench near an empty lot on Crown Street, between Oronoque and New Garden Streets, Queenstown, shortly after 12: 00hrs Tuesday.

The man has been identified only as “David”, aged about 60, neighbours said.

A resident of Lot 153 Crown Street, Davi Persaud, said “David” was discovered lying face down in a trench at the back of the bushy and flooded empty lot, located to the right of Persaud’s home.

Persaud said that the man was destitute, and had been living along Crown Street for the past 10 years.

The Persaud family had allowed the elderly man to live in a little hut in their yard, and they used to feed him, although he was not restricted to their yard, and would normally go about his business.

He was last seen at around 10: 00hrs, and Persaud said the man, who would normally state where he was going, did not say anything to her. Persaud said she found it strange that he did not show up last night. At that point she became worried, and early Tuesday morning, they began to search for him.

A handyman climbed onto her back fence to see if there was anything there, and he discovered the body. The man is believed to have gone to the empty lot to empty his bowels, but slipped in the water and drowned. The body was at the time lying face down in the deep trench.

“David” was described as a friendly man who would engage the neighbours in conversation whenever he saw them. He did not consume alcohol, and regularly attended services at the Gandhi Youth place of worship.

When the undertakers took the body out of the trench, it was clad in a black trousers and a white shirt, but it was bare- footed. A wristwatch was also on the left hand. There was, moreover, a mark on the forehead.

An undertaker from the Lyken Funeral Home was heard commenting that the land in which the body was found is swampy. The undertaker said it was “tricky to go in there”.
