The DDL Topco Juices chess tournament resumed last Wednesday at Keishar’s Sports Club and Omar Shariff maintained his lead in the seniors’ category of the tournament.
Shariff, managing his lead from the previous game, took advantage of Dennis Dillon’s mistakes. Dillon stumbled his bishop and a few moves later stumbled his queen.
Learie Webster bounced back from losses in the first three rounds to defeat Shiv Nandalall in an electrifying encounter. Webster began his attack from his opening moves and continued with some amazing combinations to secure his win at the endgame.
In the other two games, Taffin Khan defeated Glenford Corlette while David Khan prevailed over Alex Joseph.
At the end of four rounds, Shariff has the maximum four points, followed by Taffin Khan, David Khan, and Shiv Nandalall on three points apiece. Glenford Corlette and Errol Tiwari are locked on two points each, while Alex Joseph, Dennis Dillon and Learie Webster are all on one point apiece.
The tournament will continue next Tuesday at 17: 45hrs at the same venue. The tournament is a qualifier for the national junior chess championship slated for later this year. The top seven players will go through.
