Curtains fall on 2010 cycling season

– Walter Grant-Stuart wins final road race

The 11th Annual Diamond Mineral Water 50-mile Cycle Road Race, the final event for the 2010 Cycling season, was held on Sunday on the West Coast of Demerara, with cyclist Walter Grant-Stuart clinching victory and ending the 2010 cycling season in a resounding and emphatic fashion.

Grant-Stuart won in a time of one hour 58 minutes 22 seconds. The race commenced at 09:00hrs from the Wales Police Station, and proceeded to Bushy Park, Parika, before returning to the Demerara Harbour Bridge for the finish. Paul De Nobrega (of the Juniors category) was second, while Lindener Mark Lewis placed a commendable third, with Alonzo Greaves coming in fourth. Junior Niles and Warren ‘Forty’ Mc Kay finished fifth and sixth respectively. 

The Upright category went to Nigel Jacobs, followed by Ravendra Rodrigues and Shawn Frank; while the top veteran was Kennard Lovell, who won ahead of Shameer Baksh and Linden Blackman. Paul De Nobrega took the Junior category, with Raynauth Chaitram and Montel Anthony recording second and third places respectively. Forty-two riders began the race.

At the presentation ceremony, Marlon Gravesande, marketing management trainee of the sponsors, Demerara Distillers Limited (DDL), informed the participants that DDL had been very pleased to be associated with the sport over the years. He also congratulated the riders, and encouraged them to continue their training in order to maintain a high level of discipline in the sport.

National Cycling coach and organizer, Hassan Mohamed, expressed gratitude to the riders for their participation in 2010. Mohamed thanked DDL for their continuous sponsorship, which keeps the sport energised. The 2011 season will pedal off towards the end of January.
