Crystalite dancing into the 21st century

The Crystalite Dance Company has been branded the number one dance group in Guyana by its supporters. It has won many national competi-tions in all genres of dance. It is renowned for its high-risk aerial dance movements, creativity and verve.

The company’s self-taught leader, Carey Bookie, founded the troupe more than 30 years ago. Located in the south Georgetown ward of East Ruimveldt, the dance company offers a creative escape from the daily pressures of living in that community.

The Crystalite Dance Company has held many concerts at the National Cultural Centre in Georgetown and throughout Guyana, including performances at the Rotary Club of Georgetown’s International Bar. The dance group also performed in Linden, Bartica and Berbice.

The main dancer of the group is vice president Patricia Bookie, who has won numerous competitions over- seas and locally. She has also participated in a number of international dance seminars, and has been imparting her knowledge and skills to the 30-member group in Georgetown.

With hard work and perseverance, the Crystalite Dance Troupe has won the Dance Mania Competition four times in succession. They are also presently the national interpretative dance champions.

The dance company will stage another of its promotions, called “Explosion”, on Sunday, March 13, 2011 at the National Cultural Centre. The event will be showcasing the talent within the dance company in the form of Latin, gospel, hip-hop, interpretive, Indian and African dances.
