Container scanner to be up by April – GRA

In the middle of a probe to determine how a large shipment of cocaine was concealed in a container that left these shores early this month, the Guyana Revenue Authority on Wednesday announced that it had acquired a new container scanner. The Gy$ 200 million scanner was purchased in 2010 in keeping with the requirements of the international maritime laws for the exportation of products to the United States of America.

The scanner will be used to scan all exports to the U. S., the GRA said in a statement. The GRA said the acquisition of the container scanner was a result of the inability of private wharves to acquire their own scanners in order to fulfill the U. S. requirements.

Owners of private wharves had complained that the cost for that type of scanner was too exorbitant for the private sector. So government purchased the much-needed equipment. However, there were some challenges in getting the scanner operational.

The release quoted GRA Commissioner General Khursid Sattaur as saying that the scanner will greatly improve the operations of the Customs and Trade Administration, especially with the aim of transparency.”With the operation of the container scanner (nonintrusive detection equipment) there will be greater transparency in the processing of imports as well as exports, with the main focus being on exports,” Sattaur said.
