Cocaine worth US$ 72,500 found in Jamaica-bound vessel

Agents of the Customs and Drug Enforcement Unit last Friday night made a 2.5 kilogrammes (kg) drug bust at the John Fernandes Wharf during a routine inspection of an intransit vessel. According to information reaching Guyana Times International, the bust was made on a container vessel around 21: 30h. Customs officers were conducting routine inspections when the cocaine was found between two containers.

The vessel had docked at the JFL Wharf on January 26 at 16:00h and was supposed to leave Guyana for Jamaica on Friday evening.

Following the find, CANU officers were called in. No arrest has been made. The boat, this publication was informed, travels weekly to Guyana and traverses the Caribbean. The estimated street value of this recent find is US$ 72,500.

This is the second most recent cocaine bust that was made on a seafaring vessel. Customs Anti Narcotics Unit (CANU) and the Guyana Defence Force (GDF) Coast Guard Unit on January 18, acting upon information received by the GDF Coast Guard Unit, intercepted Bismark 2 belonging to a Chinese national at mid-steam with 104 kilogrammes (kg) of compressed marijuana and 27 kg of cocaine worth Gy$ 145 million. The crew members were subsequently taken into custody. According to reports, the boat was headed to Trinidad and Tobago.

Billy Glasgow, Steve Reddy Robin Mark Singh and Vishnu Sooklall of Lot 254 Fourth Street, Montrose, East Coast Demerara, and Shazim Dean, were all charged with trafficking in narcotics following the bust.

Meanwhile, the owner of Bismark 2 is still to claim the vessel. CANU gave the owner seven days to uplift the boat, failing which would result in the vessel being confiscated. To date, no one has turned up at the CANU headquarters to claim ownership.
